Stafford working with starters; good for your bench

Remember Lions QB Matthew Stafford? The young signal-caller who was going to set the NFL on his ear and become a fantasy stud while leading the Lions to the NFC North title?

Yeah, that was fun for about half of Week 1. Just before Panthers DE Julius Peppers planted him into the ground and commenced another rebuilding year for the Lions. But that does not mean that Stafford cannot become fantasy-relevant in the second half of the season. (And no reason to believe he cannot get the Lions back into the NFC North race, although we will only be dealing with one fantasy here.)

Stafford will start working with the starters this week and believes that he will be ready to go in Week 8 against the Redskins. Weeks 8 and 9 are the six-team bye weeks, so spot starters at quarterback will be at a premium, making Stafford a good option. Especially against the Redskins’ defense, which ranks next to last in pass defense.

Lions backup QB Shaun Hill had some success as a fantasy quarterback, and the Lions remain loaded at skill positions, with players getting healthy on the bye. So if you believed in Stafford before the season, there should be nothing to stop you from having confidence in him going forward.

Add Stafford to your bench if you have room and use him as backup or spot starter.
