Jets OLB Jason Taylor joined Rich Eisen on Wednesday to talk about the topic du jour around the league this week: Helmet-to-helmet hits and the NFL’s response.
Taylor has some great takes, offering thoughtful opinions on both perspectives surrounding the issue. He is also a proponent of two ideas that are being heard with more frequency regarding how to deal with hits during games — that instant replay should be involved, and the consequences for such hits should be immediate.
“I know this is kind of the hot-button issue right now, and I think there are a lot of components to this whole thing,” Taylor said. “Do we need to protect players and ensure we’re not going to have a catastrophic accident on the field? Sure we do. And I understand some players with the school of thought that it’s a man’s game and guys need to hit each other and all that stuff.
“But it’s such a fine line between a non-helmet-to-helmet hit and a helmet-to-helmet hit that it’s tough to have one rule that applies across the board. It’s going to have to be a thing that replay looks at it, and maybe the consequences during the game need to be more severed than just a 15-yard penalty. But, something needs to get fixed, for sure. At the same time, we need to preserve the true hitting integrity of the game.”
